SwingCal is UC Berkeley's swing dancing elective. We teach Lindy Hop, an African American vernacular dance created in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance. Danced to jazz music, Lindy Hop's impact on American pop culture is extremely significant. The Lindy Hop, like all swing dancing, is improvisational and done with partners through social dancing.
Students will walk out of SwingCal with more knowledge about swing and jazz history, the basic moves needed to dance lindy hop, and resources to navigate the Bay Area social dance scene. SwingCal provides students a way to learn partnered swing dancing from some of the best dancers in the bay.
SwingCal is free, beginner friendly, and requires no partner or previous experience. We meet from 6-8pm on Mondays in Social Sciences Building 126.
