This course is designed to equip students who are not familiar with journalism with the experience and materials to apply to the written editorial departments of The Daily Californian, or any other journalistic organizations. Throughout the semester, students will learn how to properly draft articles for different editorial departments. Students will both learn and write in various styles expected of the arts and entertainment, news, opinion and sports desks.
By the end of the course, students will have a stronger understanding of journalism basics and have produced a completed application for the next hiring cycle at The Daily Californian. Students will develop skills that allow them to produce quality articles, including interviewing, writing and editing. Students are expected to engage with the course on a weekly basis by attending class and participating in class activities.
Attendance will be taken at the end of the class every week. Students have two excused absences. The final assignment will be a sample application to The Daily Californian and will be due on the final Friday of the semester (before RRR Week). Students may choose any editorial department for this final project. Students will be expected to submit three articles reporting on topics covered in their department of choice that are polished and reflect comprehension of journalism basics taught throughout the semester.
