### Blockchain Fundamentals DeCal (Fall 2025)
The Blockchain Fundamentals DeCal is a comprehensive survey of key topics in cryptocurrency and the broader blockchain ecosystem. The goal of this class is to cut through the often contrasting rhetoric surrounding blockchain and instead focus on its technological foundations. By the end of the semester, you will have the knowledge and tools to form your own informed opinions about the technology.
We will explore a wide range of ideas and systems—beginning with a fundamental understanding of Bitcoin, built from the ground up, and extending into cryptography, distributed systems, and economics. Beyond the technical, the course examines the history and philosophical motivations behind digital currencies, alongside an exploration of regulations, organizations, trends, and communities that shape today’s blockchain space.
---
### Assignments and Papers
The course combines short assessments with larger projects to reinforce learning:
* Weekly Quizzes after each lecture (lowest two scores dropped).
* Three Discussion Assignments throughout the semester, engaging with current blockchain topics.
* Two Papers: a mid-semester checkpoint paper and a final paper, allowing for deep dives into blockchain topics of your choice.
Note: There is no traditional final exam—DeCals are permanently exempt by UC Berkeley policy.

* Lecture attendance is mandatory due to the interactive nature of the course.
* Students must attend at least 9 out of 12 lectures to receive full credit.
