Ovid's Metamorphoses is a work in the literary canon that has truly transformed modern media. In this literary seminar course, we will close read the enrapturing stories from Metamorphoses that showcase a range of themes including transformed figures, violence, sexuallity, animacy, and poetic form. Alongside close readings we will focus on discussing each work in detail to extract our own understandings, think about the nature of translation as a form of transformation in itself, and look at respective works of visual media to think of how Ovid’s works are applicable to the modern world. Through looking at the epic, and media ranging from sculpture to musical, this course seeks to understand and apply the work of translation and transformation. The book for the course is also provided!
