In a newly global context marked by an uptick in geopolitical conflicts, the study of International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law is becoming increasingly important to uphold international standards. These bodies of law, while distinct, share the common goal of protecting human dignity and ameliorating the conditions of life around the world, particularly in times of armed conflict and other humanitarian crises. This class will cover the core governing documents of IHL and IHRL, as well as tackle difficult conversations regarding content and coverage of the law. The class is graded based on attendance (30%), two open-note quizzes (10% each), a short midterm essay (25%), and a final video presentation or final essay (25%). Attendance is taken every class period. Ten out of twelve weeks attended receives full credit, with each subsequent absence taking away 3% of the overall grade.
We meet Mondays from 6:30-8:30 pm in Dwinelle 182. Hope to see you there!
