The goal of this course is to further our understanding of landmark cases and create open discussions as to their surrounding controversy. This course will primarily be discussion-based as it will open dialogue for differing perspectives and expand on existing respective political/legal reasoning(s) behind them. Each week, students will engage with a new case and relevant information, allowing them to explore established judicial approaches and even develop theoretical frameworks of their own. As this course is discussion-oriented, a major part of the grading basis will be determined by student’s participation in weekly discussions. We hope that students will come out of this class being able to read/analyze Supreme Court cases including opinions, interpretations, and judicial philosophies and its varying effects in the political/societal sphere. Another learning goal we would like to emphasize is the ability of students to indulge in critical discussions/debates with their fellow classmates regarding important and controversial Supreme Court decisions in an academic manner.
Students are encouraged to attend every meeting as their grade is heavily determined by their attendance and participation. That being said, we understand special circumstances might come forth and therefore every student will be allotted 2 unexcused absences, for those who exceed this limit, they will be subject to a NP (No Pass) grade. An unexcused absence is defined as an absence in the classroom without proper reason. Reasons for excused absences include, but are not limited to, medical/family/disability emergencies, and/or religious observances. Ideally, we encourage prior notification for the absence; however, we understand that this may not always be possible, therefore we would appreciate notification as soon as possible.
The Class Code for bCourses is "22628". We are currently still in open enrollment.
