This course aims to address a critical need for Cantonese language skills among healthcare professionals in San Francisco and the Bay Area. The lack of Cantonese language services creates substantial healthcare obstacles for Asian American residents, for whom Cantonese is the second most demanded language for bilingual assistance. This course aims to provide students with essential language skills in Cantonese to effectively communicate with Cantonese-speaking patients in a medical setting. The course will cover basic medical terminology, phrases, and communication strategies necessary for history taking, patient examination, diagnosis, and treatment discussions. Students will learn through lecture material and interactive language labs.
Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of Cantonese is required. However, some knowledge of Chinese is highly recommended.
Students will be evaluated based on lecture attendance, participation, assignments, quizzes, and a final project. Students must attend 11 out of 13 lectures AND receive a cumulative 70% or higher to pass the course. P/NP grading only.
