At Community Catalysts, we believe that science is more than a set of facts and equations---it's a process of discovery! In this class, you will develop the tools and mindset to make science come alive for kids in the local community. The teaching team will guide you as you work in small groups to develop your very own hands-on science lessons, including exciting demonstrations and interactive experiments that align with next generation science standards. Then, we'll connect you with real-world teaching experiences, where you'll deliver your interactive science lesson before a class of eager kids at a local elementary school! Our final "project" is a half-day science symposium during Deadweek, where we take over the multipurpose room of a nearby school and set up "science stations" for all the kids, and teachers, to interact with.
In our previous two semesters, we've brought experiential science learning to over 600 (!!) kids in the East Bay community, and had so much fun doing it. With each film cannister rocket, bucket of Oobleck, or animal adaptation challenge, we ensure that our youth remain curious, questioning, and ever-eager to learn.
If you enjoy teaching, are passionate about science accessibility, or just want the opportunity to get messy with science, this is the DeCal for you! There will be short homework assignments graded on completion, and no tests or quizzes--- just come eager to learn and ready to make an impact.
P.S. Our class is sponsored by Community Resources for Science/BASIS, a local non-profit. They generously cover all material and transportation costs for all our students!
No day(s) left until application deadline!
