Fungi are all around us – from the air to our water and from the soil to our food, life on Earth is shaped by the various roles that this kingdom of organisms plays. In this course, you will learn about the rich diversity of fungi in form, function, and their relationships and interactions with other organisms from plants to humans. This course offers a sequence of collaborative, interactive, and interdisciplinary approaches to exploring fungi from an entry-level perspective. The range of topics will begin with an introduction to fungal anatomy, reproduction, taxonomy, and ecology before diving into exploring plant and animal fungal pathogens, mycotoxicology, and the cultural significance of fungi. These course subjects will be based on a series of weekly readings and reflections, complimented by a field trip and hands-on studies. The course will ultimately culminate in the form of a focused group project on a mycology topic of choice. By the end of the course, you will have an interdisciplinary understanding of the fascinating and ever-changing roles of fungi in our world.
