This course is open to anyone interested in Chan meditation or Buddhism. No prior meditation experience is required.
The course offers an introduction to the foundational principles of Buddhist teachings and the essential practices of Chan meditation. Rooted in Chinese Buddhism, Chan meditation emphasizes mindfulness, stillness, and insight into the nature of the mind. It helps cultivate awareness and understanding of reality, leading to wisdom and compassion in daily life. Students will be introduced to:
- The concept of mindfulness and how/why it is beneficial
- The Principles of Causality and its application in real life
- Introduction to Buddha and his teachings
- Meaning of the Three Jewels and Three Refuges
- Explore the Four Tenets of Chung Tai
There is no expectation that students will subscribe to any specific Buddhist doctrines or worldviews – rather, students will learn about Buddhist understandings and will gain experience in practicing meditation. Each class will last one hour, including sitting meditation, a guest lecture, and/or a group discussion. The class consists of a weekly 1-hour lecture – attendance is mandatory. These concepts will help students understand the purpose and functioning of meditation from a Buddhist perspective. A detailed schedule is provided in the course syllabus.
During the one-hour lecture, students will learn basic meditation techniques, such as breath counting and mindfulness of breathing, to cultivate focus and awareness. The duration of the meditation varies between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the maturity of utilizing the meditation techniques. Following the meditation, depending on the schedule, there is a class activity or guest lecture. See syllabus for details.
