This DeCal works alongside Bone Health Initiative, UC Berkeley’s only student organization focused on bone health education and advocacy. BHI primarily focuses on community outreach, delivering timely bone health information that supports the development and maintenance of strong and healthy bones as well as the prevention, detection, and treatment of bone diseases. That being said, this DeCal will begin with educating you on how to maintain healthy bones and prevent osteoporosis while training you on how to educate others on this topic. After the first module, the course will develop into a more scientific approach to orthopedics, focused on anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics.
This course is 2 units (Pass/No Pass) and is split into lecture-based modules: 1) Bone Basics & Biomechanics and 2) Bone Pathophysiology. The class will be mainly lecture-based with interactive workshops, games, and simulations. The course will offer an enriched curriculum on bones, from general health and education to the anatomy and physiology of the human musculoskeletal system to biomechanical mechanisms for human movement and fractures. At the end of the semester, you will be well-rounded and well-versed in bone health education, maintenance, science, and presentation. You will also have a basic understanding of bone health and orthopedics—in both macro and micro views. Grading will be based primarily on attendance to lecture, quizzes on each of the modules, one examination, and a student-led final project at the end. A minimum of 70% of points must be earned to Pass.
