Looking to write your own feature article, publish your research paper, sharpen graphic design skills, or interview Berkeley faculty? Join the Berkeley Scientific Journal (BSJ), the premier undergraduate research journal of the University of California, Berkeley! A new issue of BSJ is published every semester on Issuu (https://issuu.com/berkeleyscientific1), eScholarship (https://escholarship.org/uc/our_bsj), and our website.
The purpose of the DeCal is to give journal members a chance to learn more about the history and social impact of science journalism while exploring career opportunities in the space. Members choose to work in one of the four journal departments (Features, Interviews, Research, and Blog). BSJ members in recent semesters have included students from various disciplines such as computer science, MCB, physics, economics, public health, business administration, and many others.
Every semester, our undergraduate staff publishes feature articles on current issues in science, interviews with faculty members, and faculty-reviewed independent research done by undergraduates at UC Berkeley. The initial purpose of the journal was to provide an official forum in which Berkeley undergraduates could publish their independent research. But since its inception in 1996, the journal has expanded to give the Berkeley scientific community a more in-depth understanding of itself, as well as a broader understanding of how events here at Berkeley affect the world and vice versa.
The focus of the journal is broad, spanning scientific disciplines from ecology and engineering to astronomy and biochemistry. Our intended audience includes, but is not limited to, UC Berkeley students, faculty, and the surrounding community. Although our published material is primarily related to the campus, some of our authors and faculty interviewees do work that involves international collaborations.
Attendance in the DeCal, held Mondays from 6-8 PM, is mandatory for members. Please email us at bsj.berkeley@gmail.com if you have any specific questions or concerns about our attendance policy.
No day(s) left until application deadline!
