Wednesdays, 1-1:59pm in Haviland 10
Overview of Course:
In this course we will explore-- biologically and socially-- the impact of substance abuse and its place in our lives.
What is addiction? Has the perception of addiction changed over time? Is there a necessary connection between self and substances? In what ways is addiction considered a disease? Does it depend on genetics? How can we develop the perceived benefits of substances—like the feeling of meaning, freedom, pleasure, goodness and satisfaction-- without substances? Can addiction be “cured”? What is the reality of substance use in our daily lives? What steps of intervention can we take to address and prevent substance misuse and substance use disorders?
Student Learning Outcomes & Objectives
1. Identify various theories of substance use and their significance in understanding substance use, misuse, and dependence.
2. Critically evaluate the historical and current responses to substance use and addiction in the United States, including the War on Drugs.
3. Identify different forms of substance abuse treatment interventions for individuals.
4. Explore the practical application of theories and interventions to personal experiences with substances.
Course Structure:
This class will be taught through in-person weekly lectures. As a class, we will engage in discussions about our own experiences and discuss assigned readings thoughtfully. Students will be expected to read the required short readings prior to each class, in preparation for a class discussion. There will also be a total of five (5) journal entries due based on a combination of the readings, class discussion, and occasionally additional materials. Students are welcomed and
encouraged to ask questions and engage in dialogue, especially with more difficult materials. At the end of the course, students should be able to personalize the class material by making connections between readings, lecture materials and discussions, and their own lives and experiences.
