This course is based on the hit show, Supernatural, which aired from 2005 to 2020, starring Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. It followed two brothers, Sam & Dean Winchester, as they battled and dealt with Supernatural forces. This class aims to explore how the show portrayed the concept of the "modern hero" by examining how it blends horror, comedy, and biblical themes to reflect the diversity and mythological depth of Ancient Greek epics. Students will pair weekly episodes with readings relevant to the assigned episodes, learning to closely analyze symbols and literary allusions in television.
Classes: One one-and-half-hour block every Monday from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM in Dwinelle Hall (excluding school holidays and breaks). Each class focuses on a specific Supernatural season(s) and features lectures, icebreakers, and discussion. Students are allowed up to two excused absences.
Homework (Readings/Quizzes): Assignments are due in class on a weekly basis. They will allow students to engage with the course content in a fun and engaging way. Every week, students will read articles and passages relevant to the assigned episodes and watch videos related to that week’s lectures.
Final Project: Students will be given an option of several different creative projects that showcase an understanding of everything taught throughout the semester.
This class is designed to be stress-free, and we welcome anyone who is interested in joining, whether they are familiar with the show or not.
As of 9/16/24, there are still a few spots open.
