The purpose of our course is to teach students about the intersection of sustainable business and global public health. This will be accomplished through an analysis of case studies from different businesses as well as discussion posts, speakers, and assignments promoting corporate social responsibility and ESG (environment, social, and government) framework. With the environment being a major factor of public health, we will study how businesses that produce smoke, oil, etc affect minority groups and economically disadvantaged communities the most. In terms of global public health, we will also specifically examine the social determinants of health and the ways in which businesses play into those factors through discussion posts, speakers, and assignments as well as looking towards ideas to help reduce this disparity in healthcare accessibility.

This class will have weekly readings and an end of semester project that can be done individually or as a group. Attendance is mandatory, and 2 unexcused absences will be allowed. If a student is sick or cannot make it to class due to extenuating circumstances, they must email both student instructors 24 hours in advance. Class will start on BerkeleyTime on Mondays from 6-7 pm.

Grading Breakdown
Attendance 50%
2 absences allowed. Email facilitators in advance if missing class. Students are expected to come to class on time and actively participate.
Assignments 25%
Every week, there will be some sort of discussion and/or reading posted on bCourses for students to complete in the weeks prior to the final project. Students are expected to complete every assignment to the best of their capabilities.
Final Project 25%
Every student, either individually or in a group, will create a sustainable business or find ways to make a current business more sustainable using the public health ideas we have learned about this class!
