This course will allow students to explore real estate investing through several academic and professional lenses. Students will be introduced to the basic concepts of real property and the fundamental principles of real estate investments. Sub-industries within real estate investment will be covered, including banking, private equity, REITs, joint venture development, and corporate real estate entities.
Readings will include book chapters, industry reports, news articles, and current academic research.
Lectures will review the required readings, and ample time will be allotted for discussion. Presentations by practitioners also will be included. Students will engage with topics through group and individual work assignments, quizzes, and case studies that allow them to apply what they have learned. The course will feature a final group case study. Students will develop the quantitative and qualitative skills necessary to analyze investment projects and make intelligent decisions about them.
Attendance is mandatory. While this course incorporates elements of a modern flipped-lecture format, students will best learn by interacting with each other and challenging or affirming certain ideas. This requires engagement and attendance on the part of each student. Special circumstances, including COVID-19 accommodations, must be discussed with the facilitator before the date of the absence.
The instructing team will administer an additional assignment if a student misses more than two classes. Based on the performance on that assignment, the student will have another chance to pass the course.
