This course offers a comprehensive examination of historical events and global initiatives that have significantly impacted International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law (IHL & IHRL). Students will analyze the complex interaction between contemporary events, domestic laws, and international agreements shaping IHL & IHRL. Topics include state sovereignty, the emergence of non-state armed groups, and other dimensions of IHL and IHRL. Through case studies and emerging trends, students will gain a nuanced understanding of the legal frameworks governing global justice and rights. Lectures follow a structure that begins with "Berkeley Time," allowing students to settle in, followed by main lectures covering key concepts, with frequent pauses for discussions led by student facilitators to ensure comprehension and encourage engagement.
In this class, your performance will be evaluated through Attendance (30%), Module Quizzes (20%), Midterm Essay (25%), and a TeachBack Presentation (25%).
