This course will question the classroom as an existing structure of passing knowledge onto students rather than inspiring critical thinking. Taking a look at the inequities and rigid boundaries of higher education, we, as a group, will try to reimagine academia and attempt to find a balance between theory and practice. Primarily working with critical pedagogy as our framework, we will engage with texts and find ways to implement theory into the classroom and outside of it. The course will take the form of a small discussion group, covering topics like positionality, passion and resistance in academia, authority and autonomy in the classroom, and many more while weaving personal experiences into the conversation. Some methods of incorporating the ideas of critical pedagogy into our space will be: dismantling power hierarchies between the facilitator and students, updating the syllabus throughout the semester to reflect each student in the learning community, establishing grading and participation guidelines as a group, and participating in a practical final project of each student's choosing.
