This is an adaptation of CHEM 299, a mandatory course for first year graduate students that was recently added. In this course, graduate students were introduced to different case studies addressing ethical questions raised by modern scientific studies along with their social and environmental impacts. The course guided the students through a healthy discussion of the topics and encouraged them to apply the things they learned to their own research practices. We wanted to bring this to undergraduates as well so they see that there is a community at Berkeley that cares about the ethical and environmental impacts of the cutting edge research that is being done every day.
By the end of this course, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of scientific responsibility and citizenship, recognizing the intricate interplay between scientific advancement and societal impacts. We will explore the historical and contemporary dimensions of scientific research, critically examining how social structures and inequalities shape scientific practices. Though engaging with diverse perspectives and social theories, students will cultivate the skills to navigate ethical dilemmas, advocate for inclusive research practices, and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of science for the betterment of society.
