BRIEF SUMMARY:
This course will focus on the broad history of ballet and ballet’s place in culture and society. Students will learn about the components that make up a ballet performance such as costuming, stage design, choreography, music choice etc and how that affects the reception of a ballet and its messages. We will conduct the class by reviewing multiple famous ballets such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Don Quixote, and The Rite of Spring. We will learn about the history of these ballets and about famous productions of these ballets. The goal for the class is for students to understand the broader history of ballet and ballet’s messages throughout time, and be able to view modern ballet through a more critical lens.
GRADING BREAKDOWN:
Attendance 60%
Participation (3 performance write-up assignments) 30%
In Class Technical Quizzes 10%
QUIZZES/ASSIGNMENTS:
Students will be given 3 multiple choice, untimed, open-note quizzes and 3 open-note performance write-ups where they critique ballet performances. Students will be provided with time in class to take quizzes. Students will write performance write-ups outside of class time.
ATTENDANCE:
If a student has an excused absence such as illness, no points will be docked from attendance. 3 unexcused absences will result in a No Pass Grade. If you miss both classes of the first week, reach out to the student facilitator. Class will not accept new students after week 4.
