The goal of this course is to explore queerness in ecology in order to critically examine (and reimagine) the way we make meaning of the natural world. We want to open a space for co-learning and discussion. Each class will focus on a topic related to queer ecology, and students will be assigned related readings each week to be discussed in class. In addition, students will share information and perspectives about each week’s topic through presentations. The first half of the class (weeks 1-7) will broadly approach queer ecology through an ecological lens, while the second half of the class (weeks 8-14) will broadly approach queer ecology through a socio-political lens. However, we recognize and welcome the intersection of these two approaches. We aim to foster an environment in which students have space to engage in self reflection as we explore the history and theories related to queer ecology. We will make journals in class and assign weekly self reflections to encourage students to deepen their connections with the course material. The average class will include a social connection prompt, a group presentation, and a class discussion that is facilitated by the instructors and focused on the weekly readings.
