Playing By Ear is a DeCal centered around teaching pianists how to construct pop songs on the piano by ear and play without sheet music. Our course requires that you have a basic background in piano and music theory. The class is formatted to have a 30-minute lecture at the beginning of class and a 30-minute workshop/discussion in the latter half. Students will have personalized learning opportunities with our facilitators and be placed into small cohorts. The class is designed to be fun, creative, and engaging, so come in ready to participate!
During the workshop period, students will be able to apply the skills they learn during lecture in their pieces. Facilitators will walk around the room and assist students in the process. Facilitators will also host in-class discussions with their cohorts to give additional lessons and feedback.
There will be a midterm and final in the form of piano performances, one in-class and one in a concert hall. Students will be allowed to choose their own songs to learn over the course of the semester. Alternative exams are offered for students who do not feel comfortable with live performances. In-person attendance is mandatory, and will be taken!
We're very excited to have you join us for the Spring 2024 semester!
No day(s) left until application deadline!
