This course will focus on basic and complex sewing and fashion design skills with the goal of presenting student designs created at a large runway show near the end of the semester. The DeCal is taught in conjunction with Fashion and Student Trends (FAST), a student fashion club on campus. As such, the primary goal of the course is to give designers the technical skills needed to produce and show their collection at the end of the semester FAST Fashion Show. This DeCal will span for the Spring 2024 semester. All new designers who wish to show their designs at the Spring 2024 fashion show must participate in the DeCal. The class will be a combination of learning through technical skill demonstrations and producing work in-studio. The purpose of this course is to provide a space that teaches creative skills that would otherwise not be taught on the campus of UC Berkeley. This DeCal facilitates the creation of a fashion designer community—helping those interested in pursuing fashion careers or love sewing and fashion design as a hobby.
