This course will provide students the opportunity to learn about Philippine history, from pre-colonial times to present-day issues experienced by Pilipinx in the Philippines and in the diaspora. Participants are encouraged to think critically and learn organizing techniques to address the imperial regimes within the Philippine and US government and hold them accountable for economic violence and political repression. The topics presented each week serve to deepen students’ understanding of the issues that the Philippines and its people have faced historically, socially, politically, economically, and culturally through a critical framework. Educational discussions and classroom workshops aim to explore various topics, such as: migrant workers, youth and student organizing, and the National Democratic Movement in the Philippines. Students will have the opportunity to engage in community work and meaningfully apply their newfound knowledge to the struggle for national liberation.

Assignments include weekly reflections, organizing exposure, and a final presentation on a topic relating to the course.
