Many of us are aware that personal data is being collected by companies around the world, but many of us don't engage in substantial dialogue about it. Which personal data are being collected? How does this tracking affect users? How does it affect the design of the technologies we use? To what extent, and in what ways, can individuals opt out of data collection? What can be accomplished by using technologies that are marketed as protecting privacy, like private browsing mode and VPNs? What are some browser extensions that reduce data sharing?
This course seeks to respond to questions like these and to help you understand why online privacy matters, how you may be tracked, and what you might do to reduce tracking. Along the way, we will seek to more broadly consider user agency and human rights in the context of digital technology. As the course progresses, you will be introduced to various concepts and tools to help you make informed decisions about your personal data.
