NOT OPEN FALL 2023 - CHECK BACK FOR UPDATED COURSE SPRING 2024
This course will introduce the climate crisis with an emphasis on justice for the people and living things that inhabit the planet. We will discuss social issues, climate hope, and regenerative solutions and explore how we, as young people, can contribute to a better future. To do this effectively, we will explore policies, activism, and sustainability efforts on large and small scales. We will have guest speakers, in-class and outdoor discussions, fun projects, involved debates, and films to explore climate change through the lenses of environmental justice, policy & sustainability.
This class is an introductory course tailored to all majors and backgrounds, as it assumes no prior technical or political/economic experience. It aims to provide students with knowledge of environmental issues and tools of change to motivate students to proactively address the climate crisis in their own capacity and interests.
At the end of the semester, students will understand environmental justice, policy, and sustainability on the UC Berkeley campus, locally in the Bay Area, and on a national scale. The final project of writing a letter to a decisionmaker on a sustainability topic will allow students to put into practice what they have learned throughout the semester. Through the speakers, facilitators, and fellow classmates, students will also build a network in the broad field of sustainability and environmental justice, which will allow them to connect and continue work in the area from any lens they would like, depending on their interests and skills.
IF THE CLASS IS FULL ON CALCENTRAL BUT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE CLASS: Please email Alex about your interest and ATTEND CLASS. Some students will likely drop so we can figure out if this course is suitable for you.
