3D printing is a rapidly growing field, with applications to many different disciplines. This DeCal explores the application of 3D printing in the area of medicine, focusing on bioprinting. Bioprinting is the process of creating 3D cellular constructs using 3D printing technology. Through the course, you will be able to understand the theory and practice of 3D printing in tissue engineering through the use of hydrogels and mammalian cell lines. The course will include 1 hour of lecture per week that can be watched at any time due to it being recorded. Attendance is not mandatory and lectures can be watched on your own time during the week. There will be quizzes to make sure you are on track with the course. Unfortunately the lab portion of the class will not be happening due to COVID-19, but we will supplement with interactive videos and modules to learn tissue engineering lab techniques.
We accept students from all years and all majors who are interested in the topic at hand. Since bioprinting is an extremely interdisciplinary field, we are looking for students with all technical backgrounds. Experience in biology or engineering is not required-- just a strong interest in learning about bioprinting technology and in solving unique engineering problems! We strongly encourage anyone who is interested to apply, as a diverse set of skills and viewpoints are very useful to the project.
We will heavily emphasize scientific literature: how to read papers related to tissue engineering and how to analyze the figures given and draw conclusions from them. The final project will be to propose your own tissue engineering project that you have researched. There will be no final exam.
