Everyone's heard the stories and the legends. We've all seen the statistics. We know about the rituals, the chants, "The Play," the prestige, and the Nobel Laureates. From Oski to Oppenheimer, Cal Band to Mic Men, "Bear Territory" and "Roll On", we know them all too well. What am I talking about? The spirit and traditions of this great University we all call home. But have you ever wondered why any of this matters in the first place?
Look no further! The Cal History, Spirit, and Traditions DeCal has the answers! Do we care if you've been to every single football game or hate everything about this school? NO! Everyone's welcome! Through this journey, you will learn the actions and traditions that have affected UC Berkeley from the very moment it was founded (and even before!) You will hear from speakers who have shaped the way this campus operates; don't worry, there will be discussions, debates, and many chances for you to speak your mind.
The course itself is very straightforward, and is designed to be doable yet thought-provoking. There will be three projects, a midterm, and a final paper, all of them brief in length! Through these assignments, you will be able to express your thoughts and really tell the course staff what opinions you have about this university. Bear in mind the projects will not necessarily be papers... you will have some choice. The attendance policy is about what you would expect: you get 2 unexcused absences. Any exceptions can be figured out through email.
Make this semester the best one yet. Take this DeCal, change your life, and learn what it really means to GO BEARS!
