Welcome to the Intro to Surgery DeCal! This class that has been offered each semester since Fall 2016. The class provides an in depth look at different surgical specialities as well as the various procedures associated with each of these specialties. The course is being adapted this semester due to the new DeCal regulations that require DeCals to be fully online.
Students will learn about specific surgical specialties from what surgical skills are used to the educational pathway necessary for that speciality. This course is meant for anyone with an interest in surgery; no prior background knowledge is necessary and all majors are welcome. We will be starting from giving presentations on basic techniques in suturing and the surgical field and working our way through specific specialties. Along the way, we will discuss in more detail several complicated surgical techniques, procedures, and how they are performed in the operating room as well as incorporate guest speakers from the health care field to talk about their respective specialty. The field of surgery is very intimidating but also highly intriguing, and we are here to offer students the opportunity to get some background about this field.
