Welcome to DSSB’s (Data Science Society at Berkeley’s) very own DeCal: Practical Data Science Skills for Internships: From Collaboration to Machine Learning!

This course is geared towards exposing you to essential Data Science and Machine Learning topics that will challenge you, sharpen your skills, and elevate you in the internship game.

In this course, you will learn everything you need to know from the ground up-- from an introduction on how to proficiently use Git/Github, to building essential collaboration skills through programming projects, querying databases with SQL, and finally, Machine Learning.

This class is a project-based, Pass/No-Pass 2-3 unit course (some projects of which will be done through collaboration) with an emphasis on Data Analytics and Machine Learning, and will consist of 3-4 projects that will help you build up your portfolio. Attendance is not required; however, the course is graded on satisfactory completion of these projects. There will be a few readings, but writing assignments are for extra credit.

We encourage all interested students of all majors to enroll in this course. The student facilitators, lecturers, and TAs intend to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to data science, with the goal of preparing you for industry. We therefore encourage students who are genuinely enthusiastic and interested in what we have to offer to enroll.

Below you can find the application form for our DeCal! To enroll, please attend our Info Session on Aug 28th, from 8:00pm - 10:00pm, at VLSB 2040 (find out more at goo.gl/6evBU7). We will be going over the syllabus and answering frequently asked questions. Sending in a very short application will all be required to receive a permission number (as we only have a limited number of spots). Future sessions will not be hosted at Kroeber 155 from 6:30 - 8:00PM. If you are interested in enrolling, but cannot make it, you must email us before class. We encourage prospective students to have some programming and math experience, although there are no strict prerequisites for this class. All majors are welcome to enroll. NOTE that Info Session attendance is not required, but those who attend the info session will be given a slight edge in terms of the application process.
