This is an introductory course about Chinese calligraphy. The primary goals are to learn about basic aesthetic principle of Chinese art and practice fundamental techniques of writing Chinese calligraphy.
Fundamental techniques cover all five major scripts: Zhuan-shu (Seal script), Li-shu (Official script), Kai-shu (Regular script), Xing-shu (Running script) and Cao-shu (Cursive script). The course introduces basic art principle and helps students practice the techniques of writing all scripts. The course encourages students to try all scripts and choose one favorite script to present in the final art work. There are no limitations for in-class practice.
The major approach in this decal is to analyze calligraphy scripts from notable calligraphers and rubbings in history. There is no mandatory reading material. The course focuses on a combination of artistic theory and art practice.
